Misinformation & fake news → spreads quickly worldwide, hard to control.
Cultural homogenisation → local cultures get overshadowed by dominant global ones (e.g. Hollywood, Western trends).
Digital divide → not everyone has equal access to global platforms, widening inequality.
Exploitation & commercialisation → big corporations profit, small creators struggle.
Loss of privacy → personal data is collected, stored, and sold on a global scale and scammers.
Mental health impact → online comparison, cyberbullying, and constant connectivity increase anxiety/depression.
Echo chambers → algorithms push similar content, reducing exposure to diverse opinions.
Dark web - creation of sites with harmful content
- Online abuse/trolling → anonymity across borders makes it easier for harmful behaviour to spread.
- Harm for children (vulnerable groups) online safety act
Trolling/ Cyber Trolling:
- when an individual/company is persistently targeted in a negative way online, usually through social media channels
The number of social media platforms available has led to a proliferation in this, as has the fact that users enjoy a degree of anonymity when posting via social media site
Case study Arianna Grande:
- after splitting up with mac miller she was trolled online as mac miller over dosed and as a result got a lot of abuse and hate crime and as a result disabled her instagram comments for a while due to the overwhelming blame and hate crime.
Cyber bullying - when an individual is targeted online, through hurtful or threatening messages, generally online.Can lead to increasing amounts of suicide especially within teenagers
Case Study - felix Alexander 2017 Manchester - bullied/cyberbullying lead to constant bullying suicide
- make a lot of people feel they need to be perfect due to what they see on social media due to perfect images such as photoshop and body image
- case study Kyle Kardashian’s - turned off her instagram comments after followers roast her for using photoshop
Negative body image - obsessing over instagram post of others lead to feelings of low self worth such as adding filters or excessive photoshop
Backlash - social media has enabled consumer to voice their own opinions on a range of issues these include big businesses whose marketing and or products they object to an example is Kim Kardashian’s recent kimono line of underwear
